Lighting Up Alresford

Each year The Alresford Pigs Association erect, service and remove over 180 Christmas trees in the heart of our town all for a single payment of £60.00 per tree. The Christmas Trees are erected by a volunteer workforce from The Alresford Pigs on behalf of the Alresford Chamber of Commerce.

All profits made by The Alresford Pigs will be used to support local needy causes.

The trees are up. Thank you for your support!

PIGS benefit from power cuts gesture

There was anger and frustration back in July when a series of power cuts hit the centre of Alresford.

The town centre was temporarily off-grid while planned works were carried out meaning the busy West Street and Broad Street shops – and homes – were powered by large generators. One of the rigs failed just after 9am on a Saturday morning and wasn’t back online until early afternoon. A similar power cut had taken place a few days earlier costing many businesses valuable trading time.

Winchester & Alresford MP, Steve Brine, took up the case and demanded answers from Scottish and Southern Energy Networks (SSEN) for what he said was a “totally unacceptable debacle”. Speaking at the time he said: “Saturday morning is a key trading period for the shops in Alresford and they cannot afford to lose that income. I have spoken with a number of businesses in the town who said they had received no notice from SSEN that the works were even taking place so we clearly need to look into this.”

SSE did eventually respond to Mr Brine to confirm that the reason the Alresford generator ran out of fuel was due to a ‘miscalculation’ by them as to the correct amount of fuel required and they were keen to apologise to those businesses affected while confirming they have since revised their calculation methods to factor in additional fuel when re-fuelling.

Steve Brine says: “The apology was very welcome but, after a little encouragement, they offered to also make a donation of £500 to the town as a goodwill gesture via local charity which is really kind. I contacted the Alresford Pigs and we agreed the donation would be made to their 2017 Christmas Tree fund which plays such an important part in ensuring Alresford remains an attractive and vibrant destination during the key festive period. Many Alresford shops have challenges at this time and I know they need a good Christmas this year more than ever.”

Oliver Barnes from the Pigs, said: “We are thrilled with this generous gesture from SSEN and it’s very fitting we can use these funds to help light up Alresford’s Christmas.”

Ray Hunter, SSEN’s Network Construction Manager for the South East Region added: “Our customers and their communities are at the heart of everything we do, and we are delighted to be helping Alresford Pigs with this year’s Christmas tree.”

The famous Alresford tree goes up at the end of November with the big Arrival of Father Christmas event in the town on 13th December.

Duck Race 2017!

Well, Duck Race year is upon us again. This bi-annual event is a great family day out with 7 races throughout the day and a Grand Final, sponsored by Hydrotech, to top it all off.

We are lucky again that George Hollingbery and family have donated the use of their fabulous gardens for the event on the 18th June this year. It’s a fabulous setting on the river and we are going to be joined by Evans the Butchers who will be selling food, we have a licensed bar, a bouncy castle, music from the Alresford Ukele Jam and Rockout school and much more besides.

All our races have been sponsored by local businesses and organisations, and we’ll be introducing you to them via our Facebook and Twitter feeds over the coming weeks.

Race programmes will be available on the day so you can choose your winners, so, put the date in your diaries, save your pennies for a flutter on the ducks, and do please come and join us on the 18th June, from 12:00 noon, for the 2017 Duck Race!

You can find more details on what happens and how to get there at where you can also find details of how you can place an advert in the programme for your local business, or book a place for a banner at the race.

We’re really looking forward to seeing you all later this month!

One Hundred & Eighty Thank You’s!!

We would like to pass on ‘one hundred and eighty’ heartfelt thank you’s to each business and each household that purchased a Christmas Tree from us this year. Alresford has never looked brighter and more festive!

You’ve certainly done the town proud!!

Scooting to a New Record!

We are proud to say that we have a 40-year history supplying mobility scooters to those in need within our community – with this service made possible by the generosity of local people who’ve donated their scooters to The Pigs to help others in similar situations.

On a pleasant Saturday morning last month, The Pigs scooter coordinator, Nick Denbow was on hand to support 4mph scooter driver Peter Petherham (Treasurer at St. John’s) in a record breaking attempt – completing numerous circuits of the church whilst raising money for both the church & Motor-Neurone Disease charities.

Peter is pictured below with his grandson on their final lap around the churchyard – following behind is June Smith of the Alresford Giles Group.

Making Donating Quicker & Easier….

In the fast paced world that we live in, it’s not always easy for people to be able to readily find a way of donating to local needy causes, so we are delighted to announce that we’ve come up with a simple, quick and easy way to do this, and have launched our very own ‘Just Giving Page’.

To make a donation anytime, simply text ACTF17 followed by the amount to 70070 (for example, to donate £10, text ACTF17£10 to 70070) – we can guarantee that this will then be put to immediate use to help support a whole host of local needs.

Alresford Show Thank You’s

A big thank you everyone who visited our Scalextric stand on Saturday and in doing so contributed to a whole host of local needy causes in the coming weeks & months.

Thank you also to our very own Murray Walker (aka. Dave Lord) for his equipment, enthusiasm & expertise.

…and thank you also to every Pig, friend, family member or assisting local group who staffed gates & car parks, stewarded and/or supported the organisers. Without you, we wouldn’t have such a fantastic Show.

We hope to see you all next year!!

A Big Thank You….

Just a quick note of thanks to everyone who braved the terrible weather last Saturday at our Car Boot Sale & Pig’s Sty.

All of the money raised will now be allocated to good causes within our community.

We hope to see you again in the sunshine at our next event!
